About the Process
Who may apply: Any AHLA member
Deadline to apply: January 27, 2021
Term begins: July 1, 2021
The number of positions available varies from year to year depending on how many leaders rotate off. Since leadership positions are in high demand, members generally serve in only one position at a time.
If you are currently serving in a Dispute Resolution leadership position, you do not need to re-apply. The application process is for new leaders only.
Dispute Resolution Council (two-year term)
The Council determines the policies under which AHLA administers arbitrations, mediations, and peer review hearings, and it promotes the Dispute Resolution Service to members and non-members. There are no more than eight members, one of whom is appointed as chair, and one of whom is a member of the Board of Directors who serves as a liaison to the Board. The Council benefits from having the perspectives of in-house counsel, litigators, and neutrals. The Council meets approximately quarterly by teleconference, with one in-person meeting at the Annual Meeting.
Dispute Resolution Review Board (three-year term)
In accordance with Rules 4.4 and 4.5 of the Rules of Procedure for Arbitration, the Review Board reviews petitions to remove arbitrators. It has five members, including the chair. All must have significant experience in the arbitration, litigation, or mediation of health law disputes. The Review Board’s workload varies depending on the number of petitions received and their complexity. Fortunately, in recent years, petitions have been very infrequent.
